Mountain House makes high-quality, freeze-dried meals. Just add water and in ten minutes or less you’ll have a hot meal for on the trail, on-the-go, or in times of emergency. We’ve been cooking up dependable and delicious meals since 1969.
Mountain House Adventure Meals™ are full-size meal pouches that are perfect for outdoor adventures. Adventure Meals™ are lightweight and portable, with homestyle meals that are packed with nutrients and full flavors for a satisfying hot meal anywhere.
Mountain House emergency meals have the longest proven shelf life of 30 years. Our Just in Case...® line includes our trusted just-add-water, freeze-dried meals for emergency planning. With #10 cans, assorted meal buckets, and multi-day kits, stocking up for "just in case" is simple.
Simple Sensations is all the reliable goodness of Mountain House freeze-dried meals, made for healthy eaters who need a quick meal on-the-go or at the office. Add water directly to the pouch, or heat in the microwave. No artificial flavors or colors. Just whole, clean ingredients and a fast food option you can feel good about. Learn more here.
All Mountain House meals are pre-cooked, so the flavors are fully locked in. All you need to do is add water! Just open the pouch or #10 can, remove the oxygen absorber, add the correct amount of boiling water (individual meals vary, so please refer to package directions), stir, then seal. In 10 minutes or less your meal will be steaming hot and ready to savor! In a pinch you can use cold water, just give it about twice as long to re-hydrate.
Don’t have 10 minutes? With Simple Sensations, you can have a delicious meal ready in just two. Open the pouch, remove the freshness packet, add pouch contents plus water to a microwave safe bowl, then in 2 minutes, dig in!
Novelties like our Ice Cream are ready to eat...just open the pouch and enjoy.
Store Mountain House food under dry, sanitary conditions, without prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures and avoiding any environment that could cause damage to the packaging, such as punctures, dents, or rust.
To maximize shelf life, store food unopened and avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures above 75°F (24°C). Follow these storage tips and you'll have emergency food when you need it.
After opening, we recommend using any dry contents within one week for best results and taste. For our Just in Case...®#10 cans, use the convenient resealable plastic lid between uses. After hydration, treat any leftover food as you would fresh food. It's real food!
Food packaged in our #10 cans are loose, not individually packaged. They make an average of 10 cups of food and are perfect for feeding large groups. You can measure out the amount of food you'd like to prepare or prepare the entire can at once by just adding water.
Our Pro-Paks are vacuum packed to prevent expansion at high altitude and to be as compact as possible. They have the same 30 year shelf life and Taste Guarantee as our regular Adventure Meal™ pouches.
Pro-Paks generally have slightly less food, too, but this can vary from recipe to recipe. We always recommend looking at calories rather than servings and to choose based on individual metabolism and activity level, since these vary from person to person and day to day.
Nope. Our facility is a nut free facility with the exception of coconut.
Our meals in our Adventure Meal™ pouches, kits and cans all have a freeze-dried, emergency food industry-leading guaranteed shelf life and Taste Guarantee of 30 years from the date of manufacture. The only exceptions are our MCWs, novelty items, and Simple Sensations. MCWs have a 3-year shelf life from date of manufacture, novelty items like our ice cream have a 2-year shelf life, and Simple Sensations have a 30-month shelf life.
The food doesn’t “go bad” after the shelf life, but the quality will start to diminish. You may notice a slight change in flavor or texture, but we've eaten food from both our Adventure Meal™ pouches and Just in Case...® cans that were over 30 years old and were still tasty!
Our Greek yogurt smoothies have a two year shelf life from the date of manufacture. The "Best By" date can be found stamped on the top of the lid and underneath this date, you'll find the Julian date (date of manufacture). The Julian date is a five digit code. The first two digits represent the year, and the next three the day of the year the product was made.
We know of no other pouch on the market with Mountain House's 30-year proven shelf life. It's important to note that we use a strict definition of "shelf life", namely that our food will still taste good, even at the end of its stated shelf life!
We're so confident that Mountain House pouches will stand the test of time that we've instituted the industry's only 30-year Taste Guarantee.
Don't worry! Your food is still good. Just remove the absorber and discard when you notice it.
Yes! The slit in the inner ice cream pouch is needed as an aid in the freeze drying process.
Great question! We have updated the shelf life on our foods several times over the years because we found the 'Best Used By' printed on our pouches was too conservative. This is why, based on real-world testing, we've moved to a 30-year shelf life on meals in our cans and pouches (excluding novelty items and MCWs). To learn more about our shelf life, click here.
To determine the new shelf life of your old Mountain House pouches and cans, you'll need to locate the actual manufacturing date. Add 30 years to the manufactured date to get the new shelf life.

Our new smoothies are made with wholesome Greek yogurt, real fruits and vegetables, and complementary spice blends for healthy, on-the-go nutrition. No artificial flavors. No added sweeteners. Just add cold water, and shake! Mountain House Smoothies are currently available in two flavors: Triple Berry and Tropical.
All that is needed is cold water. However, you could use any milk variety, or kefir, kombucha, coconut water, or other liquids.
Mountain House Smoothies have been formulated to provide the right mix of healthy protein, carbs, electrolytes, vitamins, and macronutrients that support the muscles and gut in reducing stress and inflammation. That means faster recovery from physical exertion, and fuel to keep going strong.
Yes. There are 5 strains of healthy probiotics: Bifidus, S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, and L. Casei.
Health benefits of strains from established studies include:
The primary protein source is from the Greek yogurt. Other protein comes from the fruits and vegetables, such as banana, kale, flax, beets, and tart cherry. The fruits and vegetables are the primary source of carbohydrates, with the Greek yogurt contributing as well.
There is no added whey protein, however, the milk protein in the Greek Yogurt contains a whey protein that is naturally occurring in milk.
Our smoothies are made with whole food ingredients, which naturally contain many different healthy enzymes. For example, we use 100% pure coconut water, which contains catalase and other enzymes. We also use 100% banana puree, which contains maltase and amylase. Other ingredients, like ginger and yogurt, also contain enzymes.
Not yet. It’s our desire to offer a lactose-free smoothie that offers a similar nutritional profile.
